New course beginning May 2016: Church and Sacraments

The next course at Emmanuel Training and Resources is on the Church and the Sacraments. It starts in May, and there are still spaces available. See below for a brief taster of the course content. To apply, check out the course documents.

Explore the oft-neglected doctrines of the church and the sacraments with this course from Emmanuel Training and Resources. Beginning with Calvin's foundational exposition of the doctrine of the church, the course then considers the sacraments in general, before looking in detail at baptism, infant baptism and the Lord's Supper. We conclude with an exploration of the broader social, cultural and political facets of the church's life.

This course consists of six 2-hour seminars over a period of approximately three months. Each seminar requires approximately 2 to 4 hours of preparation, which involves reading portions of the set texts. Study questions are provided to assist with your preparation and to encourage further reflection. The seminars then provide an opportunity for further discussion and teaching, exploring issues raised in the preparation.

Schedule: Six seminars, beginning in May 2016.

Topics covered in this course include:

  • The church
  • The theology of the sacraments
  • Baptism
  • Infant baptism
  • The Lord's Supper
  • The church as a polis
